PROBLEM

Goals & Constraints

Using Blueprint Digitization to Spark Engagement Through Storytelling

The Ancient Estimators project was created to connect the company’s digital blueprint tools with the fascinating history of construction estimating. While brainstorming content ideas in the marketing department, a casual remark about the first blueprints sparked an investigation into the origins of architectural planning. The idea evolved into a pseudo-documentary styled after Ancient Aliens, focused on how early estimators used clay tablets, measurements, and ingenuity long before modern blueprint digitization.

SOLUTION

Process & Thinking

Connecting Ancient Blueprints with Modern Estimating Tools

The narrative formed around the phrase “Ancient Estimators,” which cleverly critiqued outdated analog estimating processes like spreadsheets and paper plans. I researched ancient Sumerian floor plans and mud-brick construction methods, discovering an actual 4,000-year-old clay tablet containing building layouts. My co-writer shaped the script, and I took charge of video production—designing 3D graphics, filming interviews, and creating motion sequences. To ground the story in modern tools, we scanned and scaled the artifact using our digital takeoff software to test its accuracy.

Estimating Through the Ages

A Story Told in Clay

A 4,000-Year-Old Blueprint Meets Modern Technology

The centerpiece of Ancient Estimators is a Sumerian floor plan tablet—small in size, but rich in detail. We recreated it both physically and digitally, discovering it was incredibly accurate—within millimeters of modern measurements. Using digital takeoff tools, we validated that these ancient estimators had a standardized system similar in concept to ours today. The blend of history, humor, and tech intrigued viewers and made the case for evolving beyond analog methods.

  • Clay Blueprint Recreation

We 3D-modeled and re-created a 4,000-year-old floor plan from ancient Sumer.

  • Modern Takeoff Validation

The ancient layout was tested using blueprint digitization software and found accurate within millimeters.

  • Historical Meets Modern

Viewers saw the connection between ancient estimating and today’s digital workflows.

To support the release of Ancient Estimators, we launched a full-scale social media campaign featuring teaser clips, behind-the-scenes footage, and viral highlight reels—driving significant engagement and interest. The campaign was further amplified with branded giveaways, including custom canvas shoulder bags embroidered with the Ancient Estimators logo, which became a memorable keepsake for attendees. The project was also showcased in a featured speaking event at Mandalay Bay’s Solutions Showcase, where it was presented as a standout example of creative storytelling in blueprint digitization.
